Stainless steel in architectural metalwork

Stainless steel is a family of iron-based alloys containing enough chromium to form a protective surface film. Different stainless grades behave differently, so the correct grade and finish should be chosen for the environment rather than treating all stainless steel as identical.

Why choose stainless steel?

• Distinctive unpainted architectural appearance
• Useful corrosion resistance when the grade suits the environment
• Available in brushed, polished and other finishes
• Commonly considered for handrails, balustrades and feature metalwork

Grade selection matters

Indoor, urban, poolside, coastal and marine environments can place very different demands on stainless steel. The grade, finish, fabrication method and cleaning regime should therefore be specified for the actual site.

Stainless is not maintenance-free

Surface contamination, salt deposits, chemicals and poor detailing can still cause staining or corrosion. Regular cleaning and sound fabrication practices remain important.

What to compare on a quotation

Ask for the stainless grade, surface finish, welding and finishing method, fastener material, exposure assumptions, installation and maintenance requirements.
