Galvanised steel for exposed metalwork

Galvanised steel is steel protected by a zinc-based coating. It is commonly considered for outdoor gates, fencing, balustrades, frames and other fabricated products where the base steel needs additional protection from environmental exposure.

How galvanising helps

The zinc layer acts as a protective barrier and can also provide sacrificial protection to the underlying steel. Actual durability depends on coating process, coating thickness, fabrication detail, environment, damage, maintenance and any additional paint or powder-coat system.

Galvanising and powder coating

A galvanised substrate can also receive a compatible decorative coating where the specified preparation and coating system support it. The complete finish should be treated as a system rather than assuming every galvanised-and-coated product has the same performance.

Where it can be useful

Outdoor gates, fencing, security barriers, balustrades and other exposed steelwork can benefit from galvanising where the project specification calls for it. Coastal and chemically aggressive sites require particular attention to exposure and maintenance.

Standards and coating requirements

If a project requires a particular galvanising standard, coating mass or thickness, that requirement should be stated on the quotation and supported by the relevant supplier or project documentation.
