Mild steel in security and architectural metalwork

Mild steel is a widely used fabrication material because it can be cut, formed and welded into a broad range of shapes. It is commonly considered for gates, burglar bars, fencing, doors, railings, balustrades and structural metalwork where the final section sizes and design suit the application.

Why designers use it

• Well suited to welding and general fabrication
• Available in many common sections and sheet formats
• Can be formed into plain or decorative designs
• Often provides a practical balance of material cost and stiffness

Corrosion protection matters

Unprotected carbon steel can corrode when exposed to moisture and aggressive environments. The required surface preparation, coating, galvanising or other corrosion-protection system should therefore be selected around the installation location and expected exposure.

Where it can make sense

Mild steel can suit many inland and sheltered applications, but material choice should not be based on location alone. Product design, section thickness, coating system, drainage, maintenance and site exposure all affect durability.

What to compare on a quotation

Ask for the actual steel specification, section sizes, fabrication details, corrosion-protection system, finish, installation and written maintenance and warranty requirements for the product being quoted.
