Burglar bars for aluminium windows: options and prices

For aluminium windows, our fixture bars are fixed on all four sides inside the window reveal. Choose Alu-Deluxe Fixture near the sea, steel Deluxe Fixture inland for the Break-In Repair Guarantee, and Robo Clear if you want to keep the view. Burglar bars start from R1,000 a window, and the site visit and quote are free.

How fixture bars are fitted

Fixture bars are fixed on all four sides inside the window reveal. Aluminium window frames are their own fixing condition, so we check the frame type when we measure, before anything is made. The quotation names the fixing method. If yours does not, ask for it.

Option 1: fixture bars inside the reveal

Fixture bars are channels and uprights in a standard system, made to the measured window. There are four lines.

• Econo Fixture: our lowest-priced fixed window bars, with a 5-year Econo Fixture manufacturing warranty. Made in 5 to 7 working days.
• DuPlus Fixture: all steel, double uprights, no plastic parts, with a 5-year DuPlus Fixture manufacturing warranty. Made in our Alrode factory in 10 to 14 working days.
• Deluxe Fixture: our strongest fixed bar, coach-screwed on all four sides inside the reveal. It carries a 10-year Deluxe Fixture manufacturing warranty plus the 5-year Break-In Repair Guarantee.
• Alu-Deluxe Fixture: all aluminium, for windows near the sea, with a 10-year Alu-Deluxe Fixture manufacturing warranty. Alu-Deluxe Fixture Lite is the lighter variant and also carries 10 years.

Option 2: Robo Clear for the view

Robo Clear Burglar Bars are solid transparent polycarbonate, 32 mm wide and 5 mm thick. The product specification puts them at about 200 times tougher than glass, and they let through about 92% of the light. They suit inside or outside windows in all climate conditions, and we cut them to any size needed.

Robo Clear comes as a kit with one-way screws or rivets, plus caps and washers in bronze, white, grey or black. The fittings are specified for your window frame and listed on the quotation. Robo Clear Burglar Bars carry a 5-year Robo Clear warranty on the bars and take 7 days to make, supplied or installed. How clear burglar bars work has the detail.

Option 3: welded bars

If the bars should be part of how the window looks, choose a welded pattern: Cottage Pane, Spanish or Custom Welded. These are one-piece welded panels made to the window. Spanish, Cottage Pane and Custom Welded Burglar Bars carry a 2-year manufacturing warranty.

Steel or aluminium?

Choose the bar for where the window is, not for the frame. Within 500 metres of the sea, choose Alu-Deluxe Fixture: aluminium does not rust the way steel does, and steel rust warranties fall to one to three years there. Inland and under cover, steel Deluxe Fixture carries the same ten years plus the Break-In Repair Guarantee, which the aluminium line does not carry.

Aluminium can still pit where salt sits in a joint, or where it touches steel fasteners without isolation, so we specify the fasteners and the isolation. Standard colours are bronze, charcoal, white and sand. Any other colour, or hot-dip galvanising on steel, adds about a week. Read when aluminium burglar bars make sense.

What they cost

Burglar bars start from R1,000 a window. That entry point is a standard window in Econo Burglar Bars or Econo Fixture, inland, powder coated. Six things move it: the product line, the window size, the frame you fix to, the material, the design and whether we install. Robo Clear is a custom quotation, cut to your windows.

Every quotation is itemised window by window, so you can start with the riskiest windows and do the rest later. Prices include VAT. Pay in full upfront and a 7% settlement discount applies, and quotations are valid for 7 days. Escape routes and complexes

Fixed bars do not open. Plan the escape route before anything is made, and keep one window free of bars. Where a window must open, choose a trellis door or a louvre security shutter instead. In a complex, read sectional title burglar bars and trustee approval first.

Who fits them

In Gauteng our own team measures and fits; elsewhere in South Africa the Robo Door location for your town does, and in Zambia our Lusaka team. In other markets the Robo Door distributor fits, or we supply for your own fitter. The Seychelles and DR Congo are supply-only. Fixture and Robo Clear bars are realistic jobs if you fit them yourself.
