Which Security Gate for Your Home? Room-by-Room

The opening chooses the gate. A patio slider takes a retractable trellis door, an everyday front or kitchen door takes a hinged burglar door or a Deluxe trellis, windows take fixture-fitted burglar bars or Robo Clear polycarbonate, and a vehicle entrance takes a sliding or swing driveway gate. Start with the openings, not the catalogue

Walk the house from the street inwards and list every opening a person could climb through: doors, sliders, windows, the garage, the driveway. For each one note the width, what is beside it (wall, window, light switch), whether it must stay open by day, and whether it is an escape route. That list is the brief. The product follows from it.

The four product lines

Most of the choices above come down to one question: Econo, DuPlus, Deluxe or Alu-Deluxe? Econo and DuPlus are steel with a five-year manufacturing warranty, for sheltered inland openings and tighter budgets. Deluxe is the premium steel line with a ten-year manufacturing warranty and the only one with the five-year Break-In Repair Guarantee: if a confirmed forced-entry attempt damages Robo Door-made components, Robo Door repairs or replaces them, given a police case number and a written claim within 30 days. Alu-Deluxe is the aluminium line, ten years, for coastal and humid sites, without the break-in cover. Mixing lines across a house is normal: Deluxe on the front and the patio, Econo on the scullery.

Where budget goes first

If the whole house cannot be done at once, secure the openings people use and burglars test: the front door, the patio slider and the kitchen door, then the bedroom-wing windows, then the rest. A Robo Door quotation is itemised per opening, so the plan can be phased without losing the colour match or the product logic. Trellis doors start from R3,500 and burglar bars from R1,000, which is enough to get the first two openings done.

Exposure and zone change the answer

Every quotation records a corrosion zone (inland, a coastal suburb, or within 500 metres of the sea) and an exposure (sheltered, semi-exposed or fully exposed). Inland, a steel product that is sandblasted, primed and powder coated is a sound choice for a sheltered opening. On the coast, aluminium is the default and hot-dip galvanised steel the alternative. A garden gate under sprinkler overspray is fully exposed whatever the suburb, and the paint and rust warranties follow the finish and the exposure.

Escape routes

A fixed bar on a bedroom window is a barrier in both directions. Decide with the household which windows and doors are escape routes and give those an opening product: a trellis door with a key kept in a known place, or fixture bars on windows that are not the planned exit. Locks and keys

A gate is only as good as its lock and where the key lives. The number of locking points and the lock type are stated on the quotation. Agree a key routine at handover, especially for doors that are locked at night and must open fast in the morning.
