The entrance chooses the mechanism. A sliding driveway gate needs clear side run at least as long as the opening. A swing gate needs level ground and room for the arc. Where neither fits, Robo Door makes a sliding-and-turning gate. Retractable trellis doors are for doorways and patio sliders, not vehicles. Driveway gates carry a two-year manufacturing warranty.
The three mechanisms side by side
| Sliding driveway gate | Swing driveway gate | Retractable trellis door | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Movement | Runs sideways on a ground track | One or two leaves swing on hinges | Concertina, stacks to one side |
| Space needed | Side run equal to the leaf length, plus the rear post | Clear arc inside or outside the line of the gate | Stacking space beside the opening |
| Ground | Level track line across the opening | Level, or falling away from the swing | Level threshold for the bottom track |
| Used for | Vehicle entrances, most suburban driveways | Vehicle entrances with no side run, estates, farm entrances | Front doors, patio sliders, passages, shopfronts |
| Robo Door products | Sliding Driveway Gate | Swing Driveway Gate, Swing Security Gate, Garden Gate | Econo, DuPlus, Deluxe, Alu-Deluxe Trellis Door |

Choose a sliding gate when
There is uninterrupted wall or fence line beside the entrance for the whole leaf to park, and the ground across the opening can carry a straight, level track. A slider does not need any space in front of or behind the gate line, which is why it suits a short driveway that meets the street directly. It closes against a post on the far side and locks there. The leaf runs on rollers in a ground track, so the track must stay clear of leaves, grit and mud, and the site visit checks the drainage across the opening for that reason.
Choose a swing gate when
There is no side run, or the frontage is interrupted by a window, a pillar or a neighbour's wall, but there is room for the leaf or leaves to travel through their arc. A swing gate cannot open uphill, so a driveway that climbs from the street usually swings inward only if the first few metres are level, or outward if the verge allows it. Two leaves halve the arc each one needs. The posts carry the full weight of the leaf on the hinges, so post section and footing are specified to the gate, not to a standard.
When neither fits: the sliding-and-turning gate
Some entrances have no side run and no arc space: a narrow stand with a garage on one side and a boundary wall on the other. For those, Robo Door makes the Sliding and Turning Driveway Gate, which slides across the opening and turns through a corner to park along the return wall. It is engineered per entrance and quoted after a site survey.
Retractable is for people, not cars
A retractable trellis door is a pedestrian barrier. It stacks compactly to one side of a doorway or a patio slider and keeps the opening usable by day. It is not a driveway gate: the span, the wind load and the automation of a vehicle entrance need a rigid sliding or swing leaf. Our trellis, hinged or sliding guide covers pedestrian openings in detail.
Automation by mechanism
A sliding gate is driven by a single motor at the post, engaging a rack along the leaf. A swing gate takes one operator per leaf. Battery backup is an option on the quote; with it, the motor keeps working through a power cut. Safety devices are sized to the gate. The motor carries its own terms, separate from the two-year manufacturing warranty on the gate. Robo Door prepares the gate for automation at the factory, so brackets and cabling routes are built in rather than drilled through the coating later, which would count as a modification under our terms.
Slopes and levels
A sliding gate wants a level line across the opening; a fall of a few centimetres over the width is handled in the track bed, more than that needs civil work. A swing gate wants the ground inside the arc to be level or falling away. On a sloping stand the site visit is the whole decision, because the mechanism that looks obvious from the street is often the one that will not work.
Wind and solid faces
A slatted or laser-cut face turns a gate into a sail. On a wide slider that means heavier running gear and a motor rated for the load; on a swing gate it means stronger posts and hinges and, in windy sites, a gate that is hard to close by hand. Density is decided with the mechanism, not after it.
Finish and exposure
A driveway gate is usually semi-exposed or fully exposed, rarely sheltered. Steel gates are offered in finishes from plain powder coat to hot-dip galvanising; hot-dip galvanising and powder coat carries a five-year paint warranty and a rust warranty of up to ten years inland. At the coast, aluminium, or hot-dip galvanised steel with the hinge weld inspection note. All of it is stated on the quotation with the zone and exposure assumed.
Decision checklist for the site visit
- Opening width and the clear side run on each side
- What the ground does across the opening and inside the arc
- Where cars stop while the gate opens
- Pedestrian access: a separate gate or a wicket in the leaf
- Power point for the motor and cabling route for access control
- Face design, and the wind it will catch
- Zone and exposure for the finish
