How to plan a whole-home security upgrade: a worked framework

Home and business safety

Map every opening, decide fixed or retractable, plan the escape route, rank by risk, keep one finish across phases. This is a method, not a customer case study.

Updated September 2026 by Florin Ristea, General Manager.

Map every accessible opening, decide which get a fixed barrier and which need a retractable one, plan the escape route, then rank the work by risk and phase it. That is how Robo Door's site visit approaches a larger home. This article is a planning method with real product lines and anchors; it is not a customer case study.

Step 1: map the openings

List every ground-floor window, the front and back doors, patio sliders, the side passage, the driveway entrance and any boundary section that matters. Record the frame type and how the opening is used through the day. On a six-bedroom home that list is usually twenty to thirty lines, which is why the quotation is itemised per opening.

Step 2: fixed or retractable

  • Windows: fixture-fitted bars (Econo, DuPlus, Deluxe or Alu-Deluxe Fixture) or welded patterns. From R1,000 a window.
  • Patio sliders and wide openings: a retractable trellis door. From R3,500. Deluxe carries the Break-In Repair Guarantee.
  • Front, kitchen and side doors: a hinged burglar door.
  • Driveway: a sliding or swing driveway gate with battery-backed automation; two-year manufacturing warranty.

Step 3: plan the escape route

Do not cover every bedroom window with a barrier that does not open. Decide which window in each sleeping area is the second exit and give it a retractable product or leave it for a shutter. Robo Door raises this at the site visit whether or not you do.

Step 4: rank by risk

Openings hidden from the street, openings with weak existing frames, and openings that lead straight to sleeping areas come first. The driveway motor comes early if the household relies on it during load-shedding.

Step 5: one finish across phases

Choose the finish and colour once and write it on the quotation, so that phase three matches phase one. Gauteng is inland, but a sheltered opening and a garden-facing one that gets sprinkler spray are rated differently, and the paint warranty differs between them.

Step 6: an itemised quotation

Every opening on its own line with product line, dimensions, finish, fixing and installation. Then the home can be done in one go, or split across months without losing the plan. Quotation valid seven days; 70% deposit and 30% on installation, or 7% off for paying upfront.

Two examples of scope

These are examples of what a given scope came to, not a rate for a door or a window. A two-door job in Gauteng in September 2026, a Deluxe Trellis Door on a back door and a steel security gate on the front, came to about R14,500 including VAT after the 7% upfront discount. A three-opening job on the same basis, a Deluxe Trellis Door on the front door and Econo Burglar Bars on two windows, came to about R19,000. A whole-home plan is several scopes like those, quoted per opening after the site visit.

Why this is not a case study

Robo Door publishes project pages only when a real job has a record, an approved location and genuine photographs. Until then, the method lives here and the numbers come from the Terms and Conditions of Sale and current quotations.
