The colour is the last decision, not the first. On a Robo Door gate or set of burglar bars the powder coat sits on a preparation layer, and that layer sets the paint warranty: one year for plain powder coat, five years for galvanised steel. Choose the finish for your site, then the colour, then the sheen.
The finish is a system, not a colour
What the powder is applied over is what matters. Our terms of sale set out five finishes and the paint warranty each one carries.
| Finish | Paint warranty, sheltered or semi-exposed | Paint warranty, fully exposed |
|---|---|---|
| Red oxide and spray paint | 1 year | 6 months |
| Powder coat, no primer | 1 year | 1 year |
| Sandblast, primer and powder coat | 3 years | 2 years |
| Electroplating and powder coat | 5 years | 3 years |
| Hot-dip galvanising and powder coat | 5 years | 3 years |
A black gate in plain powder coat and a black galvanised gate look identical on the day they are fitted. Three summers later they do not.
Exposure changes the answer
We rate every installation by exposure. Sheltered: under a carport, a roof or a wall, out of rain and direct sun. Semi-exposed: an open driveway or entrance that gets rain but no irrigation or chemicals. Fully exposed: a garden gate in the open, dew, ground splash and sprinkler overspray. On every finish except plain powder coat, the paint warranty drops a step when the opening is fully exposed. If the gate stands in a bed that gets watered, tell the quoting team, because it changes the finish we recommend.
Coastal sites
Within 500 metres of the sea or in coastal suburbs, powder coat alone is not enough on steel. Specify electroplated or hot-dip galvanised steel, or move to aluminium, which is powder coated over a metal that does not rust. The rust warranty on hot-dip galvanised steel runs from ten years inland and sheltered down to two years on a fully exposed beachfront, so the finish matters more at the coast than the colour ever will.
Which colours show their age first
Dark colours absorb heat and show dust, fingerprints and chalking sooner. Light colours show rust staining and dirt sooner. Gloss shows scratches; matte hides them but holds dust. None of that is a reason to avoid a colour you like. It is a reason to look at a real sample in your own daylight before you order, and to match the sheen to how often you are prepared to wash the metal.
Colour by product
| Product | What usually works | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Trellis doors on patio sliders | Match the slider frame: charcoal, bronze, white | The trellis reads as part of the frame when open |
| Burglar bars | Match the window frame, or white on white walls | Bars disappear when they match; Robo Clear is the alternative where the view matters |
| Hinged burglar doors | Match or contrast the front door deliberately | A front door barrier is seen every day; it should look chosen |
| Driveway gates and fencing | One colour across gate, pedestrian gate and fence | The frontage reads as one design; order them together so the batch matches |
| Balustrades and railings | Matte or satin darks, or aluminium in light colours at the coast | Handrails are touched; satin hides fingerprints better than gloss |
Sheen and texture
Gloss, satin, matte and textured finishes are all powder coats; the difference is the surface. Gloss is easiest to wash and shows scratches most. Satin is the usual compromise on gates and doors. Matte and textured finishes hide marks and touch-ups well and hold dust, so they suit a household that washes twice a year and not more. Textured black on a laser-cut face hides the small edge imperfections that a gloss would highlight.
Matching across products and over time
Powder coat colours are specified by a standard colour reference, so a gate ordered this year and a fence next year can be matched, but batches of the same colour can differ slightly and weathering moves the older piece. Where the whole frontage must match, order it together. Where the work is phased, keep the colour reference from the first quotation and expect a small difference between old and new until the new piece has seen a summer.
Keeping the colour
Our terms spell out what keeps the warranty alive. Wash coated surfaces with mild soapy water and a soft cloth at least twice a year. No abrasives, wire brushes, solvents or bleach. Rinse off fertiliser, chlorine or sprinkler water within 24 hours. Touch up chips and scratches within 30 days. On hot-dip galvanised products, inspect the hinge welds once a year, because the welding burns off the zinc there and those points are protected with cold-galvanise paint, which is less durable than the original coating.
What to put on the quotation
Ask for the finish, the colour reference and sheen, the exposure rating assumed for your site, and the paint and rust warranty that follow from them. All four appear on a Robo Door quotation. If a quotation only says "powder coated", it is not telling you which finish you are buying.
Next step
Bronze, charcoal, white and sand are our standard colours; any other colour adds about a week. Request a free quote, WhatsApp +27 82 888 1919 or call 082 888 1919.
