Driveway gate prices in 2026: mechanism, materials and automation

Robo Door quotes driveway gates to the measured entrance, never off a price list, because side run, slope, face design, finish and automation change the number more than the gate's width does. Driveway gates carry a two-year manufacturing warranty; motors carry their own. The site visit and quotation are free and the quotation is valid for seven days.

What sets a driveway gate price in 2026

Seven things move the number. Each one is a line on the quotation.

Sliding or swing

A slider needs a track, running gear and clear side run. A swing gate needs hinges, posts and clear travel through the arc. Different structure, different installation.

Size and frame

Width and height set the steel. A 6 m opening is a different frame from a 3.6 m one, not simply more of the same.

Face design

Plain bars, slats, laser-cut panels. A solid face adds privacy and wind load, and both add steel.

Material

Mild steel inland; hot-dip galvanised steel or aluminium at the coast. See our material guide.

Finish

Plain powder coat carries a one-year paint warranty. Hot-dip galvanising and powder coat carries five years, with a rust warranty of up to ten years inland.

Automation

Motor, battery, safety beams, manual release and access control. On many jobs this is the largest single line after the gate itself.

Civil and electrical work

Track foundation, posts, cabling, removal of the old gate and making good.

What each mechanism adds to the quotation

Automation, line by line

The motor is sized to the leaf's weight and daily cycles. Robo Door fits Centurion motors, whose specification includes battery backup, so a power cut need not trap the car. Safety devices stop the gate on an obstruction. Remotes, keypads, intercoms and boom or pedestrian access are separate lines, and the cabling route for them is built into the gate at the factory so nothing is drilled through the coating later. Each line is shown on the quotation, and the motor's warranty is the motor supplier's, separate from Robo Door's two years on the gate.

Gate now, motor later

A gate can be ordered prepared for automation and motorised afterwards. The preparation, brackets and cable routes, is done at the factory and costs little; fitting them later means drilling a finished gate, which counts as a modification under our terms. If the motor is a next-year purchase, say so at the site visit and the gate is built ready for it.

Coastal driveway gates

A driveway gate is semi-exposed or fully exposed by nature. Inland, sandblasted and primed steel, or hot-dip galvanised steel. In coastal suburbs, hot-dip galvanised steel with a five-year rust warranty sheltered and three years fully exposed, or aluminium. Within 500 metres of the sea, aluminium gates and fencing, or hot-dip galvanised steel with the hinge weld inspection note: hinges are welded on after galvanising, protected with cold-galvanise paint and excluded from the rust warranty, so they need a yearly look.

Where Robo Door does publish figures

Trellis doors from R3,500 and burglar bars from R1,000 are the only published anchors. Driveway gates vary too much by entrance for an honest anchor, so the number comes from the site visit. One example gives a sense of scale, and it is an example rather than a rate: a two-door job in Gauteng in September 2026, a Deluxe Trellis Door and a steel security gate, came to about R14,500 including VAT after the 7% upfront discount. A driveway gate with automation is a larger project than that.

Supply-only driveway gates

The gate can be supplied without installation, made to the measured opening and collected from Alrode or delivered, for your own contractor to hang and automate. The installation and civil lines fall away; the gate price, the finish and the two-year manufacturing warranty stay the same. Automation fitted by others is on the installer's terms.

Terms that affect the total

Prices include VAT at 15%. Standard payment is a 70% deposit and 30% on installation. Pay 100% upfront and a 7% settlement discount applies. Finance runs three months interest-free with an admin fee, or up to 24 months with the first three interest-free, applied for by SMS to 33130, never through this site. Made-to-measure gates cannot be cancelled once production starts.

How to compare two driveway gate quotations

Same opening, same mechanism, same frame and face, same material, same finish, same motor and safety equipment, same civil work, same named warranty. Robo Door's quotation lists each so the comparison is straightforward. A quotation that is much lower usually has one of those lines missing, most often the finish, the safety devices or the civil work.
