Black laser-cut privacy panel with a protea pattern on a covered patio

Privacy Screens

Good screening blocks the unwanted view without boxing the space in.

Start with who is looking from where, then decide how much light and air should still come through. Slat panels control the view with repeated members. Laser-cut panels do the same job and become a feature in their own right.

  • Horizontal or vertical slats, or patterned laser-cut sheet
  • Wall-mounted, post-mounted or freestanding
  • Steel for rigidity, aluminium for lower weight and less rust
  • Your own pattern or artwork can be assessed for cutting
  • The same slat rhythm or pattern can carry through to gates and fencing

Design for the sightline, not the opening. A neighbour looking down onto the patio, pool equipment next to the braai and bins seen from the street are three different problems.

Slat or laser-cut?

Slatted Privacy Screens have their spacing chosen for the view, airflow and look you want. Slat size and support spacing follow the size and exposure of the panel.

Laser Cut Privacy Screens are the more decorative choice. A denser pattern gives more privacy, less light and more wind load. Very fine details may need simplifying before cutting.

Where they work

Gardens, patios, courtyards, balconies, side passages, pool equipment, bin areas and utility yards. A freestanding screen can also split an outdoor space without the weight of a full wall.

On top of a wall or fence

Raising a boundary wall or fence is a wall extension, part of our Slat Fencing range. To hide an outdoor aircon unit, see Aircon Covers.

Fixing

The fixing depends on the surface, the panel height and the wind. Tall, exposed panels need their posts and fixings designed with the panel, not added afterwards.

What affects the price?

Panel size and number, material, frame and posts, slat spacing or pattern complexity, finish and site access.

Finish and care

Steel can be powder coated, sandblasted and primed, electroplated or hot-dip galvanised; aluminium is powder coated. The paint warranty runs from one to five years depending on the finish, and galvanising adds rust cover of up to ten years inland. Robo Door slat and laser-cut privacy panels carry a 2-year manufacturing warranty. The full table is on the warranty page.

Clean coated metal now and then and touch up damage quickly. When you compare quotes, compare the view blocked, the light and air kept and the fixing, not only the pattern.
